Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) should also profit from Robotic Process Automation. Because RPA technology is an important driver for digital transformation. “RPAsset”, funded by the German federal government, will therefore develop an RPA implementation strategy including RPA guidelines for SMEs by 2021. RPA specialist Servicetrace is actively supporting RPAsset.

The RPAsset project started in May 2019. Two research institutes are leading the project which is funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. The aim of the project is to develop an introduction strategy for Robotic Process Automation (RPA) for SMEs within two years. More than 25 companies are actively involved in the project. Among them is the German RPA provider Servicetrace.

In RPA, software robots (essentially software programs) carry out rule-based, recurring digital processes at the computer for a human user. Thus the robots imitate humans and take care of monotonous, error-prone tasks for them. In 2018, the RPA software industry grew by over 60 percent, making it the fastest growing segment in the enterprise software market.

RPAsset: Standardized RPA-Strategy for SMEs

The research project is divided into different work packages. In a first step, the project participants develop a list of criteria. With this list, SMEs can ascertain which processes are suitable for RPA. Further work packages include:

  • A configurator for analyzing, defining and modelling of RPA
  • An introductory concept for the implementation of RPA applications in SMEs and development measures for employees
  • Piloting based on selected processes and a before-and-after analysis
  • A digital handbook for introducing and implementing RPA.

RPA: The First Step Towards Integrated Automation

RPA offers organizations of all types and sizes a great potential to work faster, more efficiently, more transparently, and qualitatively better. However, the hype surrounding this topic has led to many companies jumping into it without any plans. Failure is inevitable. Servicetrace is committed to RPAsset to help small and middle sized companies to benefit from this important technology as well, because RPA is about more than just increasing efficiency. RPA is the gateway to a new era of digital transformation: intelligent automation of business processes. Organizations that successfully deploy RPA can benefit faster from future automation and the possibilities of artificial intelligence. Therefore, RPA is an important transformation technology for digitalization.

Servicetrace is driving the further development of Intelligent Process Automation (IPA) in various projects. For example, the company manages the research project KI.RPA, which is also funded by the German government. In cooperation with, among others, the TU Darmstadt, Servicetrace is researching the development of self-learning software robots with the help of artificial intelligence.
